How is Veneer Produced?

Veneer flaking is the process of producing thin sheets of wood (veneer) by cutting them from a rotating log. Wood veneer is produced by slicing or peeling high-quality logs into thin sheets, typically thick 04.4 to 0.5mm thick. The process involves debarking, cooking logs in hot water to soften them, and cutting them using rotary lathes (for plywood) or slicing machines (for decorative furniture). The sheets are dried, trimmed, and sorted.

Production methods can include a Rotary Cut, wherein, the log is turned against a sharp blade, creating a continuous roll often used for plywood; by Slicing ‘Flat/Crown/Quarter’, wherein, the The log is moved vertically against a stationary blade to create sheets that look like sawn timber; by Half-Round method, wherein, the log is rotated on a lathe to create a textured, ‘rift-cut’ appearance. 

This is followed by Veneer drying, which is necessary to reduce the moisture content of the material and improves its properties such as strength, dimensional stability and durability. It also reduces the risk of warping and cracking of the veneer during further processing and use.
Veneer Repairing, is carried out to remove defects and improve the quality of the material. This may include removing knots, stains, scratches or other damage, as well as filling holes and cracks with special compounds. The repaired veneer has high strength and durability, which ensures high quality finished products. This may include small veneer patches.
